The Daniel D. Godfrey, Jr. Story

Daniel D. Godfrey, Jr. was born March 15, 1967 in Goldsboro, NC. His early childhood was spent in Snow Hill, NC and Ithaca, NY. His pre-school education was at Cornell Nursery and Cayaga Heights Elementary, Ithaca, NY and Hunter Elementary in Greensboro before entering Allen Jr. High and Dudley Senior High where he graduated with honors.
The Daniel D. Godfrey, Jr. Memorial Fund was established in 1987. The purpose is the further the aspirations of young sport enthusiasts and to encourage academic scholarship for college freshmen.
These purposes are in keeping with his own achievements during his brief 18 years of life. He was actively involved in both junior and senior high athletics in basketball, tennis, and he served as trainer for football and statistician for basketball. He was also actively involved with those organizations committed to youth development and growth. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, was a member of the Richard B. Harrison Players at NCA&TSU and a member of New Smith Grove Baptist Church, Lexington, NC. His Eagle Scout project consisted of landscaping Frazier Elementary School located in Southeast Greensboro.
Academically, he achieved a 3.24 GPA as a freshman majoring in electrical engineering at NCA&TSU. The 1986 Ayantee yearbook dedicated a full page to his memory on behalf of the entire student body.
He loved people and exerted enormous energy to help each individual achieve their own goals whether of mind or body. He would go the extra mile to help make the world a better place for all, regardless of race, where they lived or who they knew.
For those reasons, the Memorial Fund will be used to encourage athletic achievement as well as academic scholarship. It will provide partial financial support on an annual basis to deserving first year students entering A&T’s School of Engineering as well as the School of Agriculture.
